The government has announced today that new rights for parents are anticipated to come into effect on 6 April 2025, subject to Parliamentary approval.
The neonatal care provisions will:
• Be a day one right
• Apply to parents of babies who are admitted into neonatal care up to 28 days old, and who have a continuous hospital stay of 7 full days or more
• Grant these parents up to 12 weeks of leave, in addition to other relevant leave entitlement such as maternity leave
• Introduce Statutory Neonatal Care Pay, subject to continuity of service requirements and a minimum earnings threshold
Businesses should review and update their policies and handbooks ahead of these changes taking place.
