Observed November 13th – 19th, Transgender Awareness Week is a one-week celebration leading up to the Transgender Day of Remembrance, which remembers victims of transphobic violence.
During Transgender Awareness Week, transgender people and their allies take action to bring attention to the community. They educate the public about who transgender people are by sharing stories and experiences including issues of prejudice, discrimination and violence that affect the transgender community.
So, how can you support the transgender community not only in Transgender Awareness Week, but every week? One really simple way is to ensure you refer to everyone by their correct name and pronoun. Employers can also encourage staff to include their pronouns on their email signatures, LinkedIn profiles and MSTeams display names, to avoid any ambiguity. They can also ensure they avoid using gendered language in staff communication, for example, by saying ‘hi everyone’ as opposed to ‘hi ladies and gentleman.’
