It’s about time we talked about… THE MENOPAUSE!
Did you watch Davina McCall Sex, Myths and the Menopause on Channel 4 last night? It is important that businesses are aware of the symptoms and know how to deal with employees who are suffering appropriately as failure to deal correctly could lead to sex, age and disability discrimination claims. Do you have a Menopause Policy for your business?
According to the Faculty of Occupational Medicine, almost 8 out of 10 of menopausal women are in work. Usually, the menopause occurs between the ages of 45 and 55. In the UK the average age is 51 (NHS) but around one in 100 women experience the menopause before 40 years of age. In a few exceptional cases women may become menopausal in their 30s, or even younger. Often, symptoms last between four to eight years, but they can continue for longer.
The menopause isn’t just a woman’s problem… it needs to be openly talked about and addressed within the workplace to raise awareness and encourage support.
